Vegemite-Experiment

DD plays a computer game called Minecraft.  You’ve probably heard of it. I call it Legoland for grown-ups and I don’t really get it.  One of the cool things about it, though, is that she’s made friends with people all over the United States and the world – England, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, Russia, South Africa and Australia. Recently, her friends in Australia began touting the yummy qualities of Vegemite.  Now I don’t know about you, but I haven’t heard too many good things about Vegemite in my lifetime. So when DD said she was expecting a package of Vegemite and cookies from her friend in Australia (LivLiv and I thank you, “Cristel”!) I crossed my fingers and hoped that the taste test would be unleashed on her poor roommate and not me.  Well, I guess I didn’t cross enough fingers because I’m now sitting here looking at a giant tube of official Australian Vegemite…and it’s looking at me. DD thinks she has the perfect – authentic – application for this stuff that will give us our best shot at enjoying it, but I have my doubts.  Especially when POTUS himself recently told the prime minister of Australia that “it’s horrible.”

In it’s defense, Vegemite is really some legit stuff.

vegemite

Vegemite is made from leftover brewers’ yeast. So yes…Vegemite is Australian for beer by-product. No ID required.

  • Vegemite is rich in vitamins B1, B2, B3 and folate. A single 5g serving of Vegemite provides from 25-50% of the recommended daily intake for these four vitamins.
  • For 80 years the original recipe for Vegemite has remained almost unchanged.
  • In 1999 Vegemite became available in plastic tubes, similar to toothpaste tubes, making it easier to transport.
  • Twenty-two million jars of Vegemite are sold each year.

We’re gonna put on our big girl panties and find out what all the fuss is about.  The plan is to toast white bread, spread it with butter, spread a *very* thin layer of Vegemite on it, top it with a Kraft Single and melt that under the broiler.  These instructions came straight from her friend in Australia.  Here we go…

vegemite toast

DD and I each had a piece of the toast and, to our surprise, we didn’t hate it.  In fact, it seemed more of an enhancement to the snack than a separate flavor all on its own.  It was the whole umami thing, full and a little meaty.  The hardest part was convincing ourselves that it wasn’t going to be gross.

Once your tongue chooses not to reject it, and gives it a chance, you’ll find that it’s a pretty good thing.  We give it two thumbs up and will continue to try new things with it.

Have you ever tried Vegemite?  Pro or con? We will disagree with the Dresden Dolls and go with Vege-mighty delicious!

I need some new recipes now…anyone?
