I had a ridiculous toothache this week. I’d *almost* rather go through labor again than have a toothache. It started as a little “uh oh…that’s weird,” and progressed to “oh no, it’s not going away and this really hurts” in just a couple of days. After visiting the dentist, I had two more days of pain while waiting for antibiotics to kick in. In the meantime, ibuprofen wasn’t alleviating the throbbing I was feeling over half of my face (why does that happen?) and I took to Google for help. So many home remedies for toothache pain! Aspirin directly on the tooth, ice, hot water bottle, diet 7Up, peroxide, potato…surprisingly, several of them were right in my spice cabinet. The most common recommendations (after a shot of booze!) were oregano oil, cloves/clove oil, salt, vanilla/almond/peppermint/lemon extract, ginger, garlic, lime, and onion (not all together, of course)…the list read more like a recipe. I truly didn’t realize how handy my spice cabinet really could be, and that there are so many herbs that heal. Here’s a handy chart of the more common ones to help you with yours!
I tried a hot water bottle, warm salt water rinse and vanilla extract, by the way. Each worked to varying degrees, but seemed to distract me from the pain temporarily. (It is important to note that if you have a toothache, there is a reason for it and it’s best to have it taken care of by a professional as soon as possible, rather than having it treated at home in hopes that the underlying issue will go away on its own.)
