triple berry matcha smoothie 1

I’m a smoothie fan! The routine at our house goes like this: 1)  I announce I want a smoothie (no one ever argues with this); 2) Hubby grabs fruit from the freezer (its typically strawberries or bananas – I let him decide) and grinds the flax; 3) I pick out the the fresh fruit and extras like juice, yogurt, protein powder, agave, chia, cinnamon, whatever goes with what we’re creating; 4) We fill the blender and make the smoothie; 4) Drink it up (and share a little with the dog who is supervising the whole process!)

This Triple Berry Smoothie is one of our favorites and really packs a nutritional punch! This time, instead of any of our typical boosters, we added a couple of teaspoons of Kiss Me Organics Matcha Green Tea Powder to the mix. I had learned about the benefits of green tea, but never really tried it. I’m not a huge tea fan, but everything I read indicated that it was nothing like regular tea.

What is matcha powdered green tea and why do I want to put it in my smoothies?
Matcha is premium green tea powder from Japan used for drinking as tea or as an ingredient in recipes. It is used in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony for hundreds of years. Matcha is rich in nutrients, antioxidants, fiber and chlorophyll. It is sugar-free, an ideal drink for diabetics and others trying to reduce their sugar intake. The health benefits of matcha exceed those of other green teas because with matcha, you use the whole leaf, not just the brewed water. One glass of matcha is the equivalent of 10 glasses of green tea in terms of nutritional value and antioxidant content. Matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid known to relax the mind. For this reason, matcha is also known as a mood enhancer. Buddhist monks drank matcha to assist in meditation, as matcha’s amino acids, combined with caffeine, offer a sustained calm alertness over time. Amino acids are also what gives matcha is distinctive taste. They contribute to what is known as the fifth taste, or umami, characterized by a rich creamy mouth feel.

Chlorophyll and amino acids give matcha its unique taste, almost like grass or hay and a little sweetness. When added to a smoothie, it’s almost undetectable, but the good stuff is still in there!  Here’s what you need:

Triple Berry Smoothie Ingredients

I just love how beautiful and frosty the strawberries get when they come out of the freezer!

3 cups of berries – your choice (best if at least 1 cup of them are frozen)

3 T. ground flax

Add all ingredients to a blender. (If none of your berries are frozen, add several ice cubes to the blender.) Process until smooth. You may also sweeten this with agave/honey/stevia or even a banana to taste. Serve immediately.

Organic Matcha Green Tea powder

I’m really happy with this matcha powder and will continue to try different recipes.  You really can’t beat the powerful punch of health. By the way, hubby happens to love this Matcha Orange Cocktail! It’s basically a little matcha dissolved in hot water with some sweetener, poured over ice and topped with orange juice.  Yummy!
