Perhaps it’s the looser schedule, the longer days or the heat, but kids are continually requesting snacks and special treats this summer. Just this morning, my two-year old nephew asked for a snack instead of breakfast. Um, no.

In addition to making sure they are hydrated, I try to stop their ongoing requests for special treats with sliced veggies and fruit readily available at home, popcorn and dried fruit in single-serving containers in the car, and meals based on whole grains, plant-based proteins and lots of fresh fruit and veggies.

Are you looking for healthier tastier choices at mealtime this summer? With the help of Whole Foods Market, I’ve put together a roundup of family-friendly Health Starts Here recipes. Health Starts Here is a mindful approach to healthy eating that’s rooted in simple ways to build better meals. Each recipe meets the following:

  • They’re made using whole foods. These are ingredients in their purest, unprocessed forms such as an asparagus spear, a lemon slice, a scoop of quinoa or a fillet of salmon.
  • They’re plant-strong™. The fiber, protein and phytonutrients in Health Starts Here recipes come from the healthiest source — plants!
  • They only contain healthy fats. You won’t find any extracted oils or processed fats in these recipes. The only fats in them come from the healthiest sources: nuts, seeds and avocados.
  • They’re nutrient dense. A variety of nutrients – such as vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients – are essential for good health.
