How to Make Bath Salt

We’ve had quite a week – especially my hubby!  He’s had the honor of volunteering with our local Autism Support Group to teach kids how to ride a bike.  For anyone who has helped their baby learn to ride a bike, you know how much running there is, right?  Well, these lessons went all all day long for the whole week.  In the end, it didn’t really matter how tired anyone was, the bike camp was a huge success and totally worth it!

After a long, hard week (or just a day) like that, there’s nothing better than a hot bath for tired muscles – unless it’s a hot bath with relaxing bath salts. Even for a guy, it’s pretty amazing.  It’s also surprisingly easy to make your own bath salts at home – for yourself or to give as gifts.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups coarse sea salt or rock salt (rock salt takes a little longer to dissolve in the bath)
  • 1 cup Epsom salts (to soothe tired muscles and reduce inflammation)
  • 1/2 c baking soda (to soften waters and alleviate skin irritation)
  • Essential oils
  • Food coloring (if desired)

Bath Salts Ingredients

  1. In a large bowl (do not use plastic as it will absorb the essential oils…ditto for wooden or plastic spoons and spatulas), mix to combine  coarse sea salt, epsom salts, and baking soda.

  2. Add a few drops of essential oils and combine. I typically add about twenty drops total to this size recipe.

  3. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring, until you achieve the desired shade. I start with two drops and go from there. Because this is something that is for show, I generally only add color when I give this as gifts. For personal use, I leave out the food coloring.

  4. Use a few spoonfuls per bath. You can also add the bath salts to a small sachet bag rather than directly into the water.

That’s all there is to it!  Bottle it up, depending on how you’ll use it, and you’re all set for a fabulous, aromatic experience!

For gifting, make some pretty labels and put the bath salts in cute jars. I’ve used small Canning Jars, Spice Jars (affiliate links) and even recycled jars. I find that a 4 or 8 ounce jar is a good size for gifting.
